BIG congrats to Coleen Gallagher Weil on receiving her PhD today from University of Maryland - Eastern Shore Campus.

4/28/09

Many thanks to Denise Russell Levering and Pam Shettig Butler for the attached photo.  See how many of these folks you can name -- then come to Facebook to see the answer!

We are saddened to learn that Michelle Enger Stepchuck passed away last week. Debbie Brohawn and Richie Barry lost their daughter last month after a long illness. Our condolences to Cathy Soule Hayman on the passing of her mother recently.

Jane Tupin writes:  “Over Christmas holidays, I attended the NHS Reunion at the Newark Country Club.  I didn't notice anyone else from Class of '72.  Most people seemed to be from  classes of '67-69.  It was a fun but small group (about 30-40 people)   Ms Lutz and Ms Carrow came also.  Both look well.”

12/16/08

Apparently there’s a group getting together at the Deer Park on Friday, December 26th.  Your guess is as good as mine on the time and who will attend.

This just in from CA:  “My name is Chris Somers.  I was actually class of 1971, and only attended Newark HS in 1969/70.  I have many fond memories of Newark.  My best friend was Bill Morton.  And I was good friends with Lane VanCaneghem, Greg (Gary?) Roth, Mike Girocco, Sara Howard, Pam Bolen were also friends with me.   Greg and Bill fixed me up on a date with Lane...the first date of my life.
I was showing my kids my 1970 year book, and decided to google Lane...amazingly she came up as a UD photo credit!!   That was fun!   I was sobered to find out that
Pam Bolen passed away a few years ago.  Pam had written in my year book "isn't he cute" under Mike Girocco's picture.  And then she married him!!!  She must have been a very special person.  If  you look on page 46 of the 70 year book you'll see Pam and Lane having a really great time at a football game.  Who are those other girls in the front row?
I can hardly believe my son is 16, and that was the age I was at Newark High School. Wow!”

Thanks for the holiday wishes, Mary Ann.  It’s sorta sunny here in Central WI, but it is COLD outside.  And I occasionally hear gunshots because this is opening weekend for hunting season.  That’s one thing I don’t like about this area -- seeing all the dead deer strapped to bumpers and truck beds.

Just wanted to give a shout out to Donna Nahrgang Kurrle who is recovering from carpal tunnel/trigger thumb surgery this week.  Look forward to hearing from ALL of you at some point -- or seeing you on Facebook where I’m having a great time getting to know our class of ‘71 brethren.

Fondly,
Your Webmistress

Greetings, Classmates,

It was a gorgeous sunny day here in California.   I walked along the cliffs and spotted seals, all kinds of sea birds, sail boats. Truly wonderful here.

I wish you all a wonderful happy Thanksgiving holiday.  We are so very very lucky.  There is much to be thankful for! If any plans include travel to the Bay Area/San Francisco, contact me!   seaschell at earthlink dot net

Peace out.
Mary Ann Hester Schell

Condolences to Donna Nahrgang Kurrle on the loss of her aunt this week, who was also her stepmother.

Wondering if anyone was able to meet up with ‘73 at the Deer Park on Friday the 12th -- can you write and tell us who you saw?

We recently learned that Deb List Pennington has been in and out of the hospital since the beginning of the year but has now returned to work.  Hopefully she’s seen the last of the hospital!

Cathy Adams Masek writes: I am doing some very interesting documentation/assessment work right now in which I venture into vacant, deteriorated state owned historic buildings, including corncribs, barns and houses that are to be demolished! --  photograph, measure and draw -- amidst snakes and critters of all kinds, failing floor joists and poison ivy;  and then on week ends I dress up for the 6 family weddings that we have this fall - so I go from one extreme to another!  Hope all is well, and everyone is staying busy in this wild economy!  Cathy”  And she sent along a picture of her and hubby Ed from one of those weddings.

9/5/08

Come join us on Facebook - reconnect with classmates from other classes and join our own Class of 1972 group, too.

The Class of 1973 is celebrating their 35 year reunion on September 12 and 13.  They’ve graciously invited anyone from our class who’d like to join them at the Deer Park for drinks on the 12th.  If you go -- how about taking some pictures for our site?

8/17/08

Had a WONDERFUL time with Coleen Gallagher Weil and Donna Nahrgang Kurrle last week.  Here’s a pic of the three of us at a benefit dinner in Wautoma.

7/29/08

You can run but you can’t hide.  45 of you came to visit after my e-mail blast, so I know you’re out there lurking.....don’t you want to let us know what you’re doing?

Judy Shaw Hoffman writes: “...I finished my first year of substituting three or four days a week at our middle school and high school.  Now I am enjoying my summer.  I stay busy playing a little tennis, reading, and keeping my flowers and lawn looking beautiful.  I had to give up ocean kayaking this summer because of a shoulder injury a few months ago.  It is slowly healing, but hopefully I will be able to kayak next summer.  Because it was my left shoulder, I can still play tennis, just can't throw the ball up as well.  I really enjoyed reading the emails [here] and looking at the reunion pictures.  Wish I had been able to go.

Elena Rye (a/k/a Karen Pellicciaro) says, “By me is HOT & HORRIBLE! I am not a fan of the hot humid weather you may remember from living once upon a time here on the east coast [Elena is in New York City]. UGH!
Nothing really exciting here. My big excitement in August (and I guess just about everyone from Class of ‘72 gets to experience it this year) is turning 54, having been born in ’54. I have a real hard time getting my head around the fact that there is the same time distance between when we were born and now, as there was between the turn of the last century and when we were born. I can feel myself aging rapidly just thinking about it! Has this happened to you yet, i.e. when is YOUR birthday?”

{Your Webmistress:  It just so happens that I am, I believe, the youngest person in the class of ‘72, having been born in March of 1955.  Lynn Sinclair might have me beat on that score, but I don’t know her birthday.}

Jim Darden is a realtor with Remax Associates in Suburban Plaza off Elkton Rd.  He believes he might have some leads on missing classmates, so I’ll be working with him to try and track them down (assuming they want to be found...)

First time response from Tom Troup -- who just wanted to know if his addy had bounced back.  It seems he’s in the military so maybe he can’t say any more.....

Andy Zeisberg writes:  “My Garden is growing well here in Long Neck Village, because of  an extraordinarily wet Winter and Spring, some Summer Rain and lots of Summer Sun.  I had Lunch at "Jake's" with the Local "Beach Bunch" in May. They're mostly circa 1960 NHS Alumnus that meet a few times a Year for Lunch here, near the Beach. They said they plan to meet again sometime in September. Anyone interested can find more info contacts at The Honeycomb Website link, visa~v this Sites Links Page.
I'd bought Two Tickets at The Spectrum, months in advance, for "The Rolling Stones" and gave one to my Sister(formerly know of as Donna) because she had Wheels in the form of a "Bug", "Roller Skate" or "Punch Buggy" and could and did drive us up. The Year escapees me(it was the '70's).  I also saw there(solo), a fasinating "Red, White and Blue" 1976 Showing of The Ringling Brothers & Barnum and Baily Circus. Then in the early '80's, I dated a Woman that worked for Electric Factory Tickets, and we saw "The Beach Boys" there(Press Box Seats) and also other Groups and Preformers at other Venues around Philly. Yippy-I tie(d) 1 on! Peace-Luv, And...”

7/15/08 - part deux

A few of you appear to be awake:

From Cathy Adams Masek:  I am sitting here finishing a city hall project and looking forward to a week at Bethany Beach! I have one child living in Baltimore's trendy Canton neighborhood and one in college at Univ of Richmond, where she will be playing D1 field hockey, so our house will feel very lonely this fall! My website is also being updated, Cathy”

From Rozie Zappo:  “I'm National Director of Compassionate Care Hospice Foundation - if folks need our help they can reach us at www.cchnet.net there are phone numbers and addresses for many areas of the country and a wonderful way to shop on line and help raise funds for hospice patients and their families.”

From Bill Crook:  “Summer is going well. All 3 kids enjoyed swim team and are looking forward to the swim team sleepover at the pool. The boys just got their first crew cuts and it is all I can do to keep from rubbing their heads all the time. Hannah has turned into a tall leggy blonde and is very much Daddy's girl. Hope summer is going well. Billgator”

From Derek Windle:  “Lets see what’s new… A yr older that last year, a little heavier and gray, but I still think like I did when I was in my late twenties. How is that!. We have been really busy during the first half of summer with swim team at Nottingham. Both Anna and Nathan seem to have taken the activity to the next level and they love it. During other parts of the year, Nathan is a soccer dude while Anna spends 4 nights a week dancing. Liz is doing well at the U of D teaching. So other than the airplane market just starting to take a turn (down) life has been pretty good.”

7/15/08

No snow here in Central WI now!  It’s finally stopped raining (although there’s more in the forecast) and is sunny and hot.  For those of you who saw the homes sliding into Lake Delton near Wisconsin Dells, that’s about an hour SW of where I live.

Deepest condolences to Patty Duffy Berkheiser-Mehaffie who lost both her parents within a week of each other last month.

Did anyone see the news that they’re going to tear down the Spectrum in Philly?  Who did YOU see in concert there?

A few more folks have fallen off the radar:

  • Kathleen Marsh Morrison
  • Jane Tupin
  • Soupy Campbell
  • Mary Kay Smith Ferrero
  • Matt Schneider
  • Vince Reynolds
  • Linda and Chuck Vernooy
  • Joanne Kautz VanDrunen

If any of you have or know someone suffering from macular degeneration, my mother found an MD in Santa Fe, NM who uses medical acupuncture to treat it.  She went for 4 treatments at the beginning of this month and her “dry” eye vision improved by SIX lines on the eye chart.  Her “wet” eye vision has improved considerably also -- she can now see shapes where before she saw absolutely nothing out of that eye.  The improvement continues for a period after the treatment also.  Dr. Alston C. Lundgren has trained two other doctors to perform this procedure, but Dr. Lundgren himself promises you that if there’s no improvement you don’t have to pay him.  My mother gladly paid him under $1000 for her treatment and plans to go back for more.  She said the treatment is uncomfortable but not painful and the rewards are more than worth it.  Visit Dr. Lundren’s website www.reverseamd.com for more information.  Mom says she can watch tv and now actually read the scroll at the bottom of the CNN channel.

Ms. Eagle Eye herself, Linda Roushey Downs, spotted a classmate in a Lyrica (medication for fibromyalgia) commercial on TV.  Shortly after I got her e-mail, I saw the ad, too.  And even though I wouldn’t have recognized our classmate because of the way they had styled his hair, it was definitely him (I e-mailed and asked him).  Watch for the ad and see if you can guess who it is -- it’s someone who usually comes to the reunions and I was not aware that he’s done dozens of commercials over the years, even tho this is not his full-time career.

Donna Nahrgang Kurrle and Coleen Gallagher Weil are coming out to see me in August!  We’ll spend 4 days eating our way through Waushara County, Wisconsin, I’m sure.  Great time of year for brat frys and cheese curds.  And if the weather cooperates we’ll go rafting down the White River.

Belated birthday wishes to Dana Ketner Catts (July 12) and congratulations on your wedding!  Send us a pic, will ya?

On a separate note, I plan to close this website at the end of the year.  It’s not the cost or the time involved, it’s the fact that no one sends me anything to post so -- what’s the point?!  My intention in creating this site was for this to be a way for all of us to keep in touch and stay involved, not just to post what’s going on in my own life.

4/8/08

Whew!  It’s been one long winter and this past weekend was gorgeous.  Now as I sit here writing this, it’s snowing outside again!  The forecast calls for 1-2”.

Karen (Pike) and Brian Aungst have published their Tampa Bay Fine Wine Guide and it’s a beauty.  Visit their website:  www.cffinewine.com and drop them a note of congratulations.

Emory Smith’s 2nd heart surgery went well and he is now recuperating at home.  He says he can only stay up for a few minutes because of the broken ribs/ collarbone pain but he’s looking forward to returning to work. He was delighted to receive cards and notes from so many of you.

Dana (Ketner) Catts is excited about her upcoming nuptials to fiance Jim on July 12, which is also her birthday (here’s a picture of the happy couple).  I’m sure it comes as no surprise that it will be a simple ceremony in a garden, followed by all-night dancing.

1/1/08

Several updates:

Emory Smith’s 1st heart surgery went well and he’ll have a stent put in later this week.  He may be able to go home as early as next week.

(Mary Ann) Hester Schell’s father passed away days before the premier of her film.  Call her if you have her cell number.  Click here if you want to learn more about her film.

Cathy Adams Masek has a beautiful new website for her business.  Click here to learn about what she does.

12/30/07

Bonus for me:  picking up Donna Nahrgang (Kurrle) in Green Bay, WI and get to spend the day with her until returning her to the airport on Monday.  Donna graciously put me up at her house when I flew in for August’s reunion.

12/29/07 - Classmate in the hospital

Our classmate Emory Smith had a motorcycle accident on Christmas evening.  He had just left a Christmas dinner with some family members, it was dark, and he didn't see a drop off at the side of the road. The motorcycle went off the pavement, he managed to get it back up on the road, but then the bike slid out from under him.

He has 5 broken ribs and a broken collarbone. Bad and painful as that is, it isn't the worst. They discovered when they did the usual CAT scans of his chest that he has an aneurysm near his heart. Surely unrelated to the accident. So he will have 2 heart surgeries -- one this Monday, and the 2nd probably on Wed. or Thurs. next week. He is in great pain and cannot talk on the phone.  It would be great if any of you could drop him a card or note and wish him well.  He’s in Christiana Hospital’s ICU (4755 Ogletown-Stanton Rd., Newark, DE 19718 -- (302)733-1000 – Room 4D12) until his heart surgery on Monday.

12/20/07 - We may just have our very first FAMOUS alumnus!

Hester Schell (you’ll remember her as Mary Ann) has wrapped  filming on her movie and it will premiere at the Beverly Hills Hi-Def Film Festival (Fine Arts Theater, 8556 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, CA) on Sunday, December 30th at 5:30 p.m.  E-mail her your congratulations, questions, or comments.

8/28/07

Fabulous pictures!!  And thanks for all you do to keep the website for our class.  I'm sorry to have missed the reunion-  needed to be in Rhode Island with my dad, he had surgery scheduled... and my mom just recently died.  As we grow older we have both our parents and our children to care for... thus is the circle of life.  Anyway- just wanted to say hello and thanks!!  Sara Russell (Howard)

8/24/07

From Keri Teel Lee:  This site is great! Congrats! Linda Uniatowski sent me Kit's wonderful program and updates on the class. Sorry I missed it. I'm recovering from surgery and chemo but hope to be there next time!

8/22/07

YAY!! My favorite part of keeping this site live:  e-mails!

From Lynn Sinclair: 2 years ago, after 22 years of running Sinclair's Cafe, in Newark, with my brother (class of 75), I sold my share of the business and my house and moved to Kennett Square.  I opened Sunrise Cafe on State Street and a B&B called Sunrise Suites, just around the corner.  Last year my home was on the Kennett Holiday Home tour & this year I was appointed to the Kennett Historical Commission.  Please add my address to the Class of 72 directory so that I will know about the 40 yr. reunion!  Thanks, I've enjoyed reading the directory and seeing the pics!

From Jim Goodman:  Thanks for putting this together.

From Deb Banerjee:  “Almost to embarrassed to write, after saying I would come to the reunion. I was on vacation with my kids that week. But next time......  Looking at the pics brought a lump to my throat (much like your anonymous emailer)! You are the gravity that keeps us together.  Love, Deb”

From Cathy Adams Masek:  “Love all the photos posted on the website!  My beach week at Bethany Beach is always the first week of August- when this reunion is scheduled!  sorry to miss it! added to this year's beach week was moving my daughter down to Univ of Richmond, where she was in preseason practices for Div 1  field hockey team.  Very hard to part with my baby!  Thank goodness for email and text messaging.  Since I have not made the reunion for about 10 years, I am sending photos from our trip to Paris, this summer. Our son was on the Grand Tour with friends, joined us in Paris.  Yes, I can still wear clothing from high school days and exchange shoes and clothing with my daughter!  Take care, hope to make reunion if the date ever changes.”

From Alice Robinson Hypes: “MY HUBAND DIED (12) YRS AGO.I'M WITH A FORMER BOYFRIEND,HAVEN'T GOTTEN MARRY YET.I HAVE A STEP-DAUGHTER AND TWO STEP-GRANDCHILDEN. AND A CAT NAMED ''BUSTER''.”

From Sue Shemeta Stachelczyk: “Thanks so much for keeping tabs on everyone! I had intended to send a short bio but the paperwork got buried somewhere, and you know how that goes.”  She went on to give me a short bio and her new e-mail addy.  If you want to get in touch with Sue, let me know and I’ll pass it along.

From Linda Uniatowski Hanson:  “Thank you very much for the wonderful updated directory! It was great and I know how much work it was (I am still a secretary); what a labor of love you did for us. It is fascinating reading about alumni children and “grandkids.”  Nothing is really new with me and I count that as a blessing. Phil gets to go to quite a few conferences and I went with him to New Mexico last February (first time there). What a BEAUTIFUL place that is. His conference was in Albuquerque and after it was over, we drove up to Santa Fe for a day. WOW! Gorgeous scenery, even in February. The temperatures are more moderate than Arizona. It was fun! I spent one day in their museum of art, which was magnificent. Having grown up in Delaware and now living in Missouri, I feel so appreciative of Native American art and artists. So totally different from we are used to seeing and such a treasure! Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to afford to decorate a room in your home with their art???? Sure hope to be able to go back some day.  I went home to visit my mom in June; Phil had a conference in Philadelphia and while he worked, I stayed with mom. I did join Phil for a couple of days after his conference: we took in a Phillies game (their stadium is much better than ours here in STL) and we spent a day touring the city: went to their museum of art (one of the best) and took a “walking tour” where you can rent an audio tape and tour the historical part of the city on your own. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Philadelphia has come along way from my memories of it as a kid. We have visited just about every tourist highlight in Philadelphia and always glad to see how it continues to improve.”

8/21/07

Lots of you send notes thanking me for keeping the site up-to-date and wondering why I do it.  Here’s one reason, from an anonymous visitor:

“Thank you so much for the photos.  You have no idea the stroll I just took down memory lane.  Have tears in my eyes.”

8/20/07

Mary Burkert Hartsoe writes:  “I know the group was small but the pictures show that it’s still great to get together. Sorry that Greg and I couldn’t make Friday night. It was great to see everyone, in the short amount of time we were at the Deer Park. Thank you to everyone involved: for continuing to organize the reunions and keeping our website up to date.”

8/15/07

It was a small, but lively group at the Newark Country Club.  We had lots of appetizers, followed by a lovely meal and fantabulous desserts.  And then there was LOTS of dancing and catching up.  See some pictures of Friday’s event here.

Saturday evening brought many of us back to the Deer Park and we were joined by a few who couldn’t make dinner the previous night.  When the band started up around 9:30, some of us headed to the Iron Hill Brewery, and before you knew it, there were 25 of us either having a drink, a late dinner, or just dessert.  They finally had to throw us out!

I don’t know how she does it, but Pam Schettig Butler is once again the most photographed person at our reunion.  Must be because she looks just like she did in high school!

Now that Northwest Airlines has finished yanking me around, I hope to begin work on the directory this week.  Please let me know if you would like a copy e-mailed to you in PDF format.  If you require a printed copy snail mailed, it will cost $10 to cover printing and postage.

8/1/07

Well, rezzies are now closed and I’m looking forward to seeing everyone at the Newark Country Club in 10 days!!  That’s assuming my flight isn’t cancelled, too.

If you haven’t sent your bio for the directory, please do so.  The directory will be e-mailed in electronic format (a .pdf file) this year so you can send your bio any time before August 10.  If you need a printed copy and you’re NOT attending the reunion in person, the cost will be $10 for printing and postage.  E-mail me for more info or to request a copy.

7/11/07

This is the "last call" for the reunion.  There will be a sit-down dinner at the Newark Country Club on Friday, August 10 at 7:00.  This will include an open bar for beer, wine and soft drinks (mixed drinks will cost), salad, an entree with two sides, dessert and coffee.  If you plan on coming to Friday's dinner, please get your paid reservation to Helen Spence, 6207 Gooding Pond Court, Burke, VA  NO LATER THAN July 31.  Along with your reservation, please indicate your choice of entree - Prime Rib, Chicken Marsala, or Pasta Primavera (vegetarian).  Make checks for $60.00 payable to Helen Spence, with "NHS Class of ''72" on the memo line.

On Saturday, August 11 there will be an informal gathering at the Deer Park.  If you choose to, you may dine there, or join us later for some drinks and gab.  The live band begins playing at 9:00, if that makes any difference to anyone.

And remember to e-mail your information to webmistress@nhsclassof1972.com to be included in the class directory.

Oh, and quit e-mailing to ask how many alumnus are coming to the reunion -- you’ll have to show up to find out!

7/8/07

Our condolences to Bill Hinderer and family on the passing of his father last week.

6/25/07

Many thanks to Karen Pike Aungst and Connie Parks Jones for letting us know that e-mails to this address were bouncing.  It was a technical glitch and is now fixed and should not happen again.  So feel free to e-mail those bios!

6/11/07

We need 60 paid reservations in hand by July 1 in order to proceed with the reunion at the Newark Country Club on 8/10.  As of today we have 24.  If you are coming, please send your reservation to Helen Spence immediately at 6207 Gooding Pond Court, Burke, VA  22015.  We’d sure like to see you!  If you need a reservation form, click here.

Sandie Cannatelli Newman writes:  “I'm not able to come this year, I'll be out of town. Have a great time.”

5/21/07

No wonder we haven’t heard from Steve Chantler:  “I may have set the class record. I got married at 50 and had a son all in the same year.  May attend the reunion. I am not good at looking back.”

5/12/07

“Sorry but Greg and Mary Hartsoe (Burkert) will not be able to make the reunion this summer. Hope all is well with everyone. Keep in touch.”

John Berg’s on the move again:  “Just finished packing to fly out to Houston tomorrow AM.  Hard to pack for maybe a months worth of various possibilities and living on the road. . .We'll be looking for a house and I'll be starting work next week. As for the reunion, it will depend on how quickly we can sell this house, find the new one, and move - but I still hope to.  Hope all is well with you and the others in the Class of 72!”

Joan Gould Litzkow writes:  “The one weekend I can't make it to reunion is August 9th. I was so looking forward to getting back to Newark for one since I have missed all the others. It's so great of you to put this all together!  We are enjoying life in beautiful Seattle, so needless to say I don't get back to Delaware too often.

“Won't be attending. Have fun! Kathleen Miller Hubbard

5/10/07 - LOTS of news!

This just in from Sandy Wright:  “Just found out about your website and the reunion in August. Will try to make it and let you know by the deadline. In 2006 I moved to Pinehurst, NC, a world away from NYC (Manhattan) where I lived and worked for 25 years. I was in the city on September 11, 2001 and it has forever changed the way I see the world. Now semi-retired, I have become involved in local community activities that I hope will preserve and in some ways , restore the way of life I knew, loved and benefited from while I was growing up in Newark, Delaware. So much for the long and winding road. Shouts out to Kenny, Mary Kay, Robert & Lane!

I always look forward to seeing Paul Ward and Derek Windle at our reunions, but this year they will not be able to join us.

“Will not be attending. Nancy Cheeseman MacKnett

“Thanks for all the hard work guys but I will not be able to attend. Kids activities and major project at work. Good luck to all. Debra Emmert Warrington

Sue Jahn Lester is sending in her check for the reunion as we speak.

Mary Ann Hester Schell writes: “Hi Everybody!I just read through the scroll here and wow...  this is really something. I can report that Diane Spoor Ednie is living in Virginia and she came out to visit me over Easter week.  Diane and I have known each other since we were three years old and it was great to re-connect. We walked over the Golden Gate Bridge with her husband and younger son, Andrew.  And if our secret web mistress will post this picture, I'd be grateful. I'm down for a combined 71, 72, 73 party.....   sounds great. I'm living on the beach in Half Moon Bay, California, and producing/directing a stand up comedy troupe called the Hysterical Housewives and we are having a ball with it.  We have our next private party this week.  I'll be making a short movie this summer which I also wrote. I hope to see you all in August, however it all depends on work schedules. We'll just have to see.” Diane Ednie (Spoor) and Cynthia Pace (Rudy) are planning to come, and Robert Cropper said he was going...

Bill Crook was able to make my wish come true.  Coleen Gallagher Weil had lost her yearbooks in a flood many years ago and Bill was about to get rid of his, so.....Coleen now has 1971 and 1972 yearbooks of her own again.  Thanks Bill!!

5/08/07

Don Long was kind enough to pass along Mike Cotero’s address to us.

4/10/07

Bill Hinderer was kind enough to check out the “Where Are They” list and provide a new address for an MIA.  He also sent some pics from what I assume is his 50th b’day party a couple years ago.  Click here to see them.

4/6/07

Had to track down Dana Ketner Catts but finally got to talk to her on the phone and get her new address.  She’s engaged and hopes to bring her new beau to the reunion if she can work it into their summer traveling plans

4/3/07

Couple of reunion invites came back as undeliverable.  Does anyone have a current address for:  Diana Bandak, Rhonda Woods Deacon, John Boyer or Steve Smith?

4/2/07

Bill Crook sent a picture of his beautiful family and I asked him how he has the energy to keep up with little ones at our age: “Hannah is 8 and the boys are 5 (fraternal twins). The pic was from last April when we went to the Okefenokee Swamp in GA.  I think the kids keep me young. They all love hiking in White Clay park and going to Nottingham Pool. Hannah is joining the swim team this year. The boys are like having 2 puppies. Very cuddly and sweet. Sam has a big heart and is very inclusive in his play with others. Hayden is a pistol and is quite the ladies man. He showed that card quite early. All are the best kids in the world. Life is never constant and never boring.”

3/30/07

John Cobb writes:  “Hello it is nice to be able to speak to old friends.  Since 1972 I have worked at Almart, Miracle Maid, a store manager at Wall to Wall Sound, a store manager at The Computer Store,  part owner of Budget Builders, an account executive  at General Computer who won the annual contract to be the exclusive vender to the State of Delaware for all computer needs, a chain of convenience stores that I managed in Wilmington, a store manager for Al's Car Stereo where I sold former principal Mr. Freidley a stereo, and as a grunt with the State of Delaware where I suffered a stroke in 1998.”

John is very proud of his “piece of the Stone Balloon my wife gave me, since spent so much money...er make that time there.  I am now collecting disability insurance.  'Nuff said.”

Although I’ve not yet gotten the details of how he escaped Hurricane Katrina, John Berg finally checked in:  “Life's hectic out here - lots going on with work and a likelihood that I might be moving again in the next couple of months.  Yes, I'm currently in California - love the weather out here - it's all it's advertised and more - and the beaches - and the mountains - and the . . . .  just costs a mint to live here - not that it looks like I'll be here much longer (living on the side of the hill on the Palos Verdes Peninsula - view of the Pacific and Long Beach Harbor - cool breezes - sunny weather). I'll owe you the full story on this and more.”

Linda Roushey Downs wrote that she was coming to the reunion sans husband Terry.  When I asked her why, she wrote:  “Terry was so sad nobody was 18 but him at the last reunion. And nobody recognized him. We have kept up with people and he thought it would be wild, like racing a '65 Mustang again. Wrong- we are old!!!”  I guess he changed his mind and now we’ll see him on August 10.

3/15/07

Jane Creswell wrote to ask about a reunion update and says:  “Things are about the same here. I'm still working at UD (33 years in May), still taking care of rental property (down to 2 townhouses now) ... I'm also on the Board of Elections for Newark and we are getting ready for a mayoral election on April 10. Other than that I stay busy with all my animals and try to see my great niece and nephew as much as possible (Jerry's grandkids).

Mark Sisk dropped a note saying, “love the pics of Newark on your page..even tho i see it 'most every day...”

Coleen Gallagher Weil and her husband John flew into Madison, WI on Saturday, and Emory Smith joined us on Sunday in Green Bay.  We’ve had a wonderful time eating, drinking, sharing our lives.  This is the 3rd year that Coleen has joined me for her Spring break which coincides with my birthday.  John Weil is participating in a triathlon on May 20,2007 in Columbia, Maryland as a member of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training. He will be swimming 1.5 km, biking 40 km, and running 10 km.  If you can make a donation to this worthy cause, please click here.

Karen Pike Aungst writes:  “Brian & I had a great time during the Outback Bowl celebration over the New Year's weekend in Tampa. We spent some time with Coach Butch Simpson and his wife Char and we invited them to join us Aug. 11th at the Deer Park. Butch & Char joined us at the last gathering there 5 years ago and said they would definitely try to make it this time. They were at the Bowl game to support Newark grad BranDon Snow who is a senior at Penn State. Coach Simpson came to NHS in 1971 and has built a legacy of 235 wins and - 9 state championships as head coach. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in August.”

Emory Smith just spent a week with me at my home in WI and we had a wonderful time reminiscing and catching up.

Helen King Spence writes to all from Burke, VA:  “I just took the time to read all the way through the postings and it just makes me more excited than ever about our reunion. I am looking forward to seeing so many of you in August. My two sons are both out of the house - so Stan, my husband of 30 years, and I are now real empty nesters. We are enjoying that, and only having to worry about our own schedules. Our older son, Robert, is 25 and lives in Orlando, Florida - where he is the bass player in an alternative rock band called "Traverser". They are playing in clubs all around that area, and have just finished their 2nd CD - they have 19 original songs on disc now. He does, however, have a day job, so that he can pay the bills. Our younger son, Greg (24), is a graduate athletic trainer at the University of Nevada in Reno, where he is pursuing a Master's Degree in Education. He graduated from James Madison University in May of '06.

Again, I can't wait for August 10 - a chance to enjoy visiting with so many of you. As one who went through the Newark HS feeder system all 12 years, there are a lot of you I went to school with all 12 years. Everyone have a safe spring and summer and I'll see you in August!”

Coleen Gallagher Weil writes:  “What fools we are...John and I are travelling to Wautoma to visit Kit in the beginning of March...even though she tells me last night that it was -12 not including the wind chill! I just looked at this site for the first time...it was so depressing to see everyone talking about 20 year old kids...how come our four are between 27 and 31...but the good news is the 27 year old finishes law school in May and the 31 year old will be the last one to be married in August so they are all officially ON THEIR OWN! Finally turned in my dissertation proposal so maybe by this time next year I'll finally be out of school for good too! We just celebrated 5 years back on the Eastern Shore, but I'm starting to miss Seattle...we lived there for 25 years and all the kids/grandkids are between Seattle and Portland...I'm actually getting sick of sunny days every single day of the week...some nice dreary cloud cover would be nice now and then. When I lived in Washington I used to think my mom was nuts when she'd complain about too much sunshine...I'm finally beginning to see things her way.”

Been enjoying a lovely correspondence with Jan Eachus class of ‘64 (brother to Sheila). Jan has been working in England UK. for the Royal SPCA for the past 30 years. He says he “loved the pictures of Newark. Made a very dull English weather day bright happy. Brought back fond memories.”

Derek Windle writes:  Liz is doing great teaching at the U of D full time, kidlets are growing like weeds, Anna turns 13 in January and acts it, Nathan will be 9 in May and he is a real bud. Anna is into dance in a big way….going on 5 yrs and Nathan enjoys soccer in the fall, indoor winter and spring….and of course both are die hard swimmers at Nottingham Green Swim Club. And Derek is a stroke and turn judge for 6 weeks during swim season. Other than that, I’m a weekend warrior in the yard cultivating ‘Short Wood Gardens” and Anna is always helping out. She seems to like it just as much as I do. Just awesome especially during the 2nd and 3rd week in May.

12/1/2006 - Reunion Update!

Andy Zeisberg thought “Buzz Board” was more appropriate than “Bee Board”.....and he was right.  Thanks, Andy!

11/19/2006 -- Got a lovely long letter from Linda Uniatowski Hanson.  She gave me Pam Sepannen Knotts’ new e-mail address and told me she and Keri Teel Lee had finally met for lunch after living in the same city (St. Louis) for many years!  Linda also told me about John Greenplate’s enlistment after his daughter got her orders to go to Afghanistan.  You can read the very interesting article here.  John also lives in St. Louis.  Linda and her husband recently visited Portland, OR on business and then took a side trip to Vancouver, BC which she says is beautiful.  Linda’s been holding out with pics from our last reunion -- she promised to send them soon and I will post them here.

11/15/06 -- Nancy Dunn Cosgrove and John Branca have both visited this site recently and updated me on their addresses so we can stay in touch.

11/12/06 - Friday, August 10, 2007 is the date that’s been chosen for our 35 year reunion.  More details coming soon.

10/3/06 - I need some help!  Here’s a list of the e-mails that came back to me this last time as undeliverable:  Chris Walpole; Eileen Thurman Fritsch, Joanne Kautz VanDrunen, John Lowe, Kathy Clancy McDermott, Pam Sepannen Knotts, Beth Greenwell, Cindy Rudy Pace, Rhonda Woods Deacon, Sue Hall Zolnick, Fred Walton.  Anybody have an updated addy for these people?

10/3/06 - WOW!  Thanks for the e-mails!  Here’s what some of our classmates are up to these days:

Mary Ann (Hester) Schell is still enjoying sunny California; Kenny Boys is currently in Philly finishing "Around the World in 80 Days". In early November he’ll be in rehearsals for "Great Expectations" Off- Broadway starring Kathleen Chalfant from "Angels in America". He sends a shout out to Mary Kay Smith Ferraro and Sandy Wright (she lives in NC now); Debbie Reed Danahay has moved to Buffalo and hopes to finally be able to attend some alumni functions; Judy Shaw Hoffman has two kids at the UofD and one still in high school who plays in a band, so guess who is the family chauffeur?; Debra Emmert Warrington writes that her son Parrish is in a band called Johnny Duke and the Aces, johnnydukeandtheaces.com that apparently is quite popular in the area.  She’s run into Jim Leininger, Bill Hinderer, Lane VanCaneghem, Pat Murphy (‘71), and Richie Arimoto (‘71)  while supporting her son’s group; Susan Jahn Lester’s son graduated from college this past May and her daughter is starting college! She says “Newark has changed a lot over the past years with Main St. booming all the time. Lots of good restaurants and shops. The college campus is so pretty with all the landscaping and renovations over the years (much nicer since I went there).”

Mary Lou Thomas (‘80) has been Googling herself (in spite of the risks involved!) and came across this site.  Ever the good citizen, she put me in touch with Chip Bryan, who can now be crossed off our “Where Are They” list.  Chip lives in Seattle and works for Boeing.  He says he doesn’t get back to Newark much but an upcoming reunion would be a mighty good excuse.

Our deepest condolences to Donna Nahrgang Kurrle on the loss of her husband, Brent this morning (7/21/06) after a brief battle with lung cancer.

“I would enjoy having other classes along with ours since I had many friends in both the 1971 and 1973 classes” says Judy Shaw Hoffman.  She also says:  “I live in Mullica Hill, NJ. I have 3 sons, the oldest will both be at the U of Delaware this fall. My youngest is entering 9th grade. I keep busy with volunteer work in the schools, singing in the church choir, and playing tennis. I sang and acted in my first play last year which was a lot of fun. I hope to begin substitute teaching this fall.”

Michelle Matsko Creegan dropped by recently: “I recently attended an U of D South Florida Alumni cocktail party and the president of UD was there and I met some great people, but none from our class.  Hope to see all of you at this reunion, I came to the 20 year one @ Schaffer's Canal House and had a great time.”

Received this note from Andy Zeisberg:  “Not a ‘fully true’ Alumnus, I went to school with many until the 10th grade when I transferfed to Wilm. HS. I much later achieved an AA in Professional Photography from Cecil Com. Col. and a BA in Art from U.Md.Balto.Co.”  Andy has kindly offered to send some pics of Newark to post on this site.

Lost another one: John Brown was killed in an auto accident on November 23, 2005 in Newark

Phil Reynolds (Class of 1973)  recently bought the old Down Under in Newark.  He’s converted it into a fairly nice restaurant/bar called Tracks, which is a little more upscale than the Deer Park.  Tracks is located at 60 North College Avenue, between Main Street and Cleveland Avenue.  Check it out and send me a review!

Paul Ward brings us the sad news that John Cardamone and his wife, Pam, were killed in October 2005 when John's motorcycle broad sided a pickup truck at an intersection in Pontiac, Michigan.  John and Pam had been married for 27 years and have two sons (both in their 20's).

Bob Calhoun says he and his wife have taken up bike riding to help keep in shape.  He still works as a consulting forester providing forest management expertise to landowners across the southeast.  They live in Georgia.

Deb Banerjee thought it would be fun to have all three classes together.  He just hopes we don’t plan the reunion for October of 2007 because he’s planning a trip to India.

It appears that the debate about whether to have a joint reunion with ‘71 and ‘73 has been partially decided for us.  Sources say that ‘71 was approached to do a reunion with ‘67-’69 and they declined.  ‘71 has planned their 35th reunion for November 25th of 2006 at the Aetna Fire Hall.

I know this is a long-shot, but does anyone have a 1972 yearbook they don’t want anymore?  I’d be glad to pay up to $25 for it.  Please e-mail me if you do.

I was afraid we’d lost track of Connie Parks Jones again, but she responded to a postcard inquiry with the following e-mail:  “For anyone who might want to know: my world is perking along very nicely! Our oldest is a daughter who is making her way with Morgan Stanley and is 25. Next is our 19 year old son, who is in his second year at West Point and he loves it. The life style is intense to say the least and that is exactly why he likes it so much!!! Then the youngest is a daughter and she is a rising senior and deep into the college search. She has always wanted to be a veterinarian so she is headed to a big "ag" school. As for me I am involved with pet therapy with my Great Dane and our yellow Lab and this is something I have wanted to always be involved in. Very, very rewarding! Also, I "rock" babies in the I.C.U. unit of a local hospital. It is a program to benefit both the infant and the parents when the baby is too sick to go home and the parents are unable to come on a daily basis to the hospital to do their own rocking. If anyone can say HI to Derek and to Steve Chantler and Nancy, Dana, Priscilla.  I know that not all these folks live in the Delaware area but maybe someone can pass my HELLO. Thanks and my best to all!!!”

Karen Pike Aungst checked in with this: “If you are taking votes on the reunion being combined with other classes or just for our class - I would vote for just our class. We had a great time at the last reunion and we have been to all of them. It seems that our turn out has been strong - our class still likes to party. It's actually getting difficult to tell who was in our class and who the spouses are; if we add other classes to the mix I would think it would be really hard to figure out who everyone is. Either way, we will be there.”

We have a classmate whose last known address is Kenner, LA -- just 13 miles from New Orleans.  I have sent him an e-mail and will let you know if/when I hear anything from John Berg.

Is there anyone in Newark with a digital camera who can take some pics around town and send them to me?  It might be interesting for those who don’t live in town any more to see how much Newark has changed.

Kay Kudukis has an opinion on the combined reunion:  “I think the 71, 72 and 73 reunion idea is phenomenal.  Sign me up!”

Got e-mails through this site from Mark Sisk (‘70), Sally Pinto Krapf (‘69) and Mary Lou Thomas (‘80) with clues as to the whereabouts of some of our MIAs.  Thanks to all who took the time to write!

Enjoyed catching up with Patti Forster Schubert this a.m.  She’s living in Louisville, KY with her husband of 29 years and loving it.

Jim Curran writes to say: "Hi Friends,  I live in beautiful Winston-Salem, NC, where I’m a biology professor at Wake Forest University.  I met my wife, Carol, at the University of Delaware, and we’ve been married for a short 28 years. We’re blessed with two kids, one in college and one in high school.  If you are ever in the area, please look me up."

Colleen Thompson McElfresh’s stained glass store just celebrated 12 years.  Visit on-line at www.bluebirdstainedglass.com

Kenny Boys writes that he is now Off-Broadway rehearsing "Walk Two Moons" at the Lucille Lortel Theater.  And, most important, he is a Great Uncle for a second time!!!

Pam Schettig Butler would like to see a combined reunion of the classes of ‘71, ‘72 and ‘73.  What does anyone else think?

Linda Uniatowski Hanson’s had her hands full October 2003 through July 2004 when her husband was very ill. He required three major surgeries and four hospitalizations within those 9 months but happily is fine now and has returned to work after a 5 month absence.

Robert Cropper sold his Bon-Go restaurant business, sold his house and moved to Paris for 4 months.  He’s back in Cape Cod now but just having a lazy summer.

Got a note from Beth Greenwell Lambert that she’s living in Maine, painting landscapes and teaching art.

A bit of fun from Karen Pellicciaro (a/k/a Elena Rye): “I just had to weigh in on the red hat thing.  When I first moved to NYC I bought this really cute red hat, which I have saved all these years because I still think it's really cute, though I haven't worn it in ages because it gives me hat hair.  Then recently I see this really cute red rhinestone pin in a catalog and I think I will order it, because it looks just like my red hat that I don't wear because of the hat hair.  Then I notice that there are other little chotchkas all over the page that look like my red hat, and a t-shirt you can get with pictures of hats on it that look like my red hat, and now I'm thinking a cross between OH COOL and WHAT THE #### IS THIS?"  THEN I see there is this thing called THE RED HAT SOCIETY and that their motto is WE SHALL WEAR RED HATS, and NOW I'm thinking ####ING ####!!--NOW I CAN NEVER WEAR MY RED HAT AGAIN OR I COULD BE MISTAKEN FOR A MEMBER OF THIS PSEUDO-SUBVERSIVE SOCIETY!  Is this what our rebellious Baby Boomer '60's-era protest generation has come to? A bunch of grey-haired tea-partiers in red hats? (And purple feather boas too, by the way.)   Not that there is ANYTHING wrong with over-50 women getting together and waltzing around celebrating their oldness, but with the help of Spanx and Maybelline I am trying to squeeze the last little drops out of my ability to look somewhat younger than my age, which will not be technically OVER 50 till August.  Not to mention that the Red Hat Society appears to exclude all men, which is--hey--I believe technically sexist, no?  Is there something wrong with me?  Am I being vain, or in denial, or just cranky? (A sure sign of old age!)  Could somebody who has kids please get their rebellious teenagers to start a "TAKE BACK THE RED HAT" movement?  I would appreciate it very much.”
